BROADCAST & WEBCAST MARATHON The IWTC took the commemoration of the 6th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution (SCR) 1325 to the airwaves, the Internet and to various other media venues in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, the Philippines and New York. We held a number of events, including: 1. A Broadcast Marathon 2. 1325 Broadcast Campaign, and 3. On the Ground! On the Air! Women Claiming 1325
1. WEBCAST MARATHON Co-hosted by the International Women’s Tribune Center (IWTC) & Radio FIRE (Feminist International Radio Endeavor)
IWTC and Radio FIRE, out of Costa Rica, hosted an eight-hour broadcast and webcast marathon featuring interviews with messages from women in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Israel, Palestine, Costa Rica, among others, on Thursday, October 26, 2006, from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
A number of participants from New York were also be interviewed, including Mrs. Bineta Diop, Executive Director, Femmes Africa Solidarite (FAS); Sam Cook, PeaceWomen Project Associate; Maria Olsen, International Alert London; Ramina Johal, Senior Coordinator, Protection and Participation Project, Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children; Janet Benshoof, President and Founder of the Global Justice Center; Thin Thin Aung, Women’s League of Burma Presidium Board member for the Women’s Rights and Welfare Association of Burma (WRAB); as well as two women Nobel Peace Prize winners, offering perspectives on SCR 1325, its implementation, progress, and significance. 2. 1325 Broadcast Campaign IWTC, the Uganda Media Women’s Network, the Liberian Women Media Action Committee, a number of African community radio stations, and Isis International – Manila, broadcast Women Talk Peace, a local language radio programme series focusing on the use of SCR 1325 in addressing the conflict in Northern Uganda, the role of women in reconstruction in Liberia, and women’s participation in peace processes in Mindanao, Philippines, on community radio stations in the Philippines, Uganda, Liberia, and other parts of Africa. The programmes will be aired in English, Bassa, Kpelle, Swahili, Luganda, Liberian English, and Filipino. Dates: October 23-31, 2006
3. On the Ground, On the Air! Women Claiming 1325 Local language radio productions on UNSCR 1325 in Bassa, Kpelle, Luganda, Swahili, Filipino, French and English, produced by the IWTC in partnership with various organizations, were launched in celebration of the resolution’s 6th anniversary.
