Agenda 21: Programme of Action for Sustainable Development, 1992 (A21) This agenda is the Report of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. It was adopted, together with the Rio Declaration (see below), by over 170 governments. Agenda 21 outlines a comprehensive blueprint for action for the achievement of sustainable development, that is, development that meets the needs of the present while not compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Agenda 21 devotes a chapter to 'Global Action for Women Towards Sustainable Development' (chapter 24). It acknowledges that women have a vital role in environmental management and development and promotes their full participation in all aspects of environmental decision-making. Through their involvement in non-governmental organizations, women helped to persuade governments in Rio to adopt such a progressive document. While the Report is not legally binding, it is very influential in shaping environmental policies and practices. |
