CBD: Convention on Biological Diversity, UNEP, 1993

This Convention was prepared by the United Nations Environment Pro-gramme (see below) and has been ratified by over 50 countries. Its objectives include conserving biological diversity and promoting the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. It encourages appropriate access to genetic resources and the appropriate transfer of relevant technologies that takes into account all rights over them. That is, the Convention requires countries to protect bio-diversity so that people may continue to enjoy its benefits.
