CCM: Convention on Consent to Marriage, Minimum Age for Marriage and Registration of Marriages, 1962 (entered into force 1964) This Convention reinforces article 16 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (see below) which recognizes rights associated with marriage. It requires that countries ensure that marriage is not entered into without the full and free consent of both parties. It also requires that a minimum age for marriage be legally established and that exceptions are made only for serious reasons, in the interests of the intending spouses. Finally, it compels states to ensure that all marriages are registered in an official register by a competent authority. |
