NWC: Night Work Convention, ILO 171, 1990 (entered into force 1995)

This ILO Convention aims at protecting both women and men night workers. A night worker is someone whose work requires a substantial numbers of hours of night work. Night work is work performed during a period of at least seven consecutive hours that include the hours between midnight and 5 am. States are required to ensure that certain measures are adopted to protect the health of night workers, assist them to meet their family and social responsibilities, provide opportunities for occupational advancement and compensate them appropriately. Some categories of workers are excluded from coverage, including agricultural and fishing workers. Implementation is supervised by the ILO.
