RD: Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, 1992

This Declaration was adopted at the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. It sets out 27 principles to guide sustainable development. Principle 20 recognizes that women have a vital role to play in environmental management and development, and that their full participation is essential to the achievement of sustainable development. While the RD is not legally binding, it is a very influential statement of principle that was agreed to by over 170 countries.
